Udal Thailam - A warm Hug From the Mother Land.
உடல் தைலம் - Udal Thailam. (Body Oil)
As the owner of The Leaning Tree Apothecary, I wanted to pay homage to my grassroots of being Tamil, rooted in a vibrant culture. This oil’s recipe is the scent of home — the energy and sounds of Ayurvedic massages on oiled-up teakwood beds, under a wooden ceiling fan, listening to the palms sway, and tropical birds chirp in the distance. This calming, multi-sensory experience is bottled into this oil, made from ancient herbs that men and women collectively gathered and blended.

The base of this oil is cold-pressed sesame oil, traditionally used to deeply nourish and warm the body. It is infused with small-scale, in-house farmed Manjistha, known to support healthy circulation and skin clarity; Ashwagandha root powder, valued for grounding the nervous system and supporting strength and resilience; Ceylon Cinnamon Alba, used to stimulate circulation and warmth; and finally Krishna Tulsi, revered for its calming, protective and balancing qualities.
This oil helps balance Vata dosha by grounding, warming and nourishing the body, helping to settle restlessness and bring steadiness to daily rhythms. The essence stays with you, carrying you through the day calm and grounded.
This oil has been carefully created at a slow pace, in an environment of full, loving intention — to support circulation, flow and natural body rhythms. Made for modern life, it can be used pre or post sauna, before or after shower or bath, or in the steam room.
The benefits of Udal Thailam
Udal Thailam has been created as a daily oil — something to return to when the body feels tired, the mind feels scattered, or the pace of these current times, life may seem overwhelming. This blend works on both a physical and subtle level, offering warmth, circulation and a sense of being held.
Used regularly, this oil may help:
-
Encourage healthy circulation and warmth in the body
-
Support muscle relaxation and joint comfort
-
Nourish and soften the skin
-
Ground excess mental activity and restlessness
-
Bring steadiness to daily rhythms, especially during busy or stressful periods
For me, this oil feels like an anchor. Something I’ve been wanting to share with you all for a long time — especially knowing how overwhelming life can feel at times. There is a quiet reassurance in these herbs, blended into a warm oil, that feels uplifting and supportive, carrying you gently through the day.
The herbs within the oil
Cold-pressed Sesame Oil (Nalla Ennai)
The foundation of this oil, sesame is deeply nourishing, warming and strengthening. In Ayurveda it is prized for its ability to penetrate deeply into tissues, supporting circulation, joint health and skin vitality. Its warming quality makes it especially supportive for Vata imbalances, dryness and fatigue.
Manjistha (Rubia cordifolia)
Manjistha is traditionally used to support healthy blood flow and skin clarity. It is known as a cleansing and balancing herb, often used to encourage movement and circulation within the body. In oil form, it supports the skin while helping the body feel lighter and more fluid.
Ashwagandha Root Powder
Ashwagandha is a grounding and strengthening root, valued for supporting resilience during times of stress. It is traditionally used to nourish the nervous system, encourage steadiness and support overall vitality. In this oil, it brings a deeply calming and stabilising presence.
Ceylon Cinnamon Alba
Cinnamon adds warmth, stimulation and gentle invigoration. Traditionally used to encourage circulation and energy, it helps the oil feel enlivening without being overwhelming — offering comfort, warmth and subtle uplift.
Krishna Tulsi (Sacred Basil)
Krishna Tulsi is revered for its protective, calming and balancing qualities. It is often used to support emotional clarity and ease. In this blend, Tulsi brings a soft, aromatic layer that helps settle the mind while uplifting the spirit.
